Erato Editor-in-Chief Jimmy Liu (CM'23) Discusses New Issue

By Sarah Engel

The School of LMC’s own Jimmy Liu (CM’23) serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Georgia Tech’s only Literary and Arts magazine, Erato. He’s been involved with the publication for three years, serving as editor for the last two.

“My favorite thing about Erato is collaborating with the staff all year to create a magazine we can be truly proud of,” Jimmy says.

What sets Erato apart from other organizations, he explains, is that they give Georgia Tech’s creativity a place to shine. Instead of reporting on goings-on around campus, politics, or sports, Erato publishes student art, photography, and creative writing. The staff is responsible for reviewing submissions, designing magazine layouts, and organizing events to promote their work.

Last year, the Erato team submitted their 52nd annual edition, “The Coming Home Issue,” to the ACP Pacemaker Contest. They were ultimately chosen as finalists, a testament to their creative achievement in publishing at Georgia Tech. The theme of their new issue, which is set to be released in the next couple of weeks, is “Visions of Fantasy.”

“It is a celebration of the power of imagination and the limitless possibilities that exist within our minds,” Jimmy says. “It is a reminder that we are capable of creating entire worlds and characters that exist only in our thoughts. Moreover, this theme is about the escape from reality.”

The idea is that, by separating one’s self from the stresses of everyday life, one can “engage with deeper truths and universal concepts in a way that is both entertaining and inspiring.” In this newest edition, many submissions are inspired by mythology, folklore, science fiction, dreams, and personal experiences.

Be sure to check out the 53rd edition of Erato, “Visions of Fantasy,” available soon on news racks across campus. If you’re interested in getting involved with Erato, follow them on Instagram (@erato.gt) and join their Discord for all communications.
